Biggy and First Born are big fans of mince pies and consumed their fair share over the holiday period, last year Biggy bought me a jar of mincemeat to make some of my own; I never did, this year he bought me another jar, I still didn’t make any. Then the other day flicking through Jo Wheatley’s Home Baking book I came across her Mince Bakewell Tart recipe which was a cross between mince pies and a bakewell tart (which is First Born’s favourite) so I thought I would give it a go.

It was lovely and easy to make especially as I got to use my flashy new Kenwood Mixer – thank you Biggy – you just make the pastry, cover bottom with the mincemeat,

make up the bakewell filling and bake, all done. It all went well except the pastry was a bit over-cooked (burnt) around the edges – I must get myself an oven thermometer as this oven tells lies – but other than that this is a winner.

Note to self: First Born did mention that the mincemeat flavour was quite strong so to try less but Biggy thinks that wouldn’t matter as it will be quite an intense flavour no matter what and although the almond flavour isn’t strong it is the texture of the bakewell that goes well with it so I think I will stick with it and give it a go again next Christmas.
